Dredging

SNF offers a wide range of products and technical services within the dredging sector, from treatment chemistry to equipment design and installation and tails management.  This can take place with any waterway or municipal or industrial storage lagoon.

With an extensive range of polymers, preparation, and dosing equipment manufactured in-house and a well-seasoned team of application specialists, SNF offers a comprehensive range of unique capabilities and resources that no other polymer manufacturer can provide.  Regardless of the industry or duration of the project, SNF can design a program that will best suit your needs.

SNF polymers are sold and marketed extensively in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment applications worldwide.  Many of these same SNF polymers are also used by dredging contractors for enhanced solids-liquids separation of dredged sediments to reduce sludge volumes that must be reclaimed or disposed of.  In doing so, settling, thickening, and dewatering of sediments can be accomplished much more efficiently and expeditiously when compared to the time and land mass required for upland disposal sites or storage ponds.

SETTLING / THICKENING

Settling and thickening of dredged sediments utilizing polymer treatment to obtain clear overflows or discharges in the following ways:

  • Directly into hopper dredges – to enhance the settling rate of fine sediments and clarify overflow water for discharge
  • Before settlement ponds – improved settling rate of fine sediments and solids capture means less land and fewer ponds necessary, with cleaner overflow water for reuse or discharge in a shorter period

DEWATERING

Polymers used in dewatering dredged or pre-thickened sediments produce friable cake solids capable of reclamation or disposal.  Some of the standard dewatering methods used in dewatering dredge sediments with the aid of SNF polymers, equipment, and service are:

  • Geotextile tubes
  • Belt filter presses
  • Plate and frame presses
  • Centrifuges

PORT CONSTRUCTION

SNF’s proposal departs from the traditional dredging process for sediments from port construction or waterway dredging projects. The resulting dried sediment is typically heterogeneous after many years of natural drying in upland or nearshore containment ponds or lagoons.

However, with SNF polymers injected before settling/thickening within a containment pond or lagoon, homogeneous flocs of sand and fine particles leave valuable land or dewatered solids much faster than settling without polymer treatment.

Our process requires less acreage for settling areas, and land can be re-used much faster than without treatment.  It is a cost-effective alternative, as less capital investment is needed, and our process is less expensive overall than conventional sediment settling and disposal.

CONTAMINATED SEDIMENTS

In the case of contaminated sediments, SNF polymers can enhance the dewatering of those sediments, resulting in cleaner discharge water and reduced volume of solids that need to be transported and disposed of in an approved hazardous waste landfill.
