As we continue our exciting growth journey, we are pleased to announce the introduction of a new role within our Health & Safety structure for an Environmental and Sustainability Advisor based at our Production Facility in Billingham. This is a full time, permanent position.

The main purpose of the role is to support the business, conduct all site environmental and sustainability initiatives, ensuring full compliance with all applicable environmental regulations and sustainability standards. Focusing on continuous improvement, resource efficiency, and regulatory adherence to drive the site’s commitment to environmental excellence and sustainable operations in line with top-tier COMAH site requirements.

This is a group-wide role with an expectation of a minimum of 10% travel to support the business.

 The key duties and responsibilities of this role will include the following: 

  • Support the development and implementation of environmental and sustainability strategies, ensuring compliance with UK environmental legislation, COMAH regulations, and corporate sustainability goals.
  • Proposing, developing and reviewing site procedures and processes to achieve environmental and sustainability compliance and SNF environmental and sustainability objective
  • Collaborate with all stakeholders to embed best practices across site operations, ensuring effective environmental risk management in line with COMAH requirements.
  • Communicate key environmental and sustainability objectives to site teams and wider stakeholders, fostering a culture that prioritizes environmental stewardship and sustainable industrial practices.
  • Ensure that contractors and third parties comply with environmental regulations and site-specific requirements, providing assurance that risks are effectively managed and mitigated.
  • Act as the site’s focal point for environmental technical advice, supporting teams with regulatory compliance, process improvements, and identifying opportunities for innovation and best practice.
  • Monitor and report on environmental and sustainability performance, ensuring alignment with corporate targets, legal obligations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Lead or support environmental incident investigations, ensuring lessons learned are shared across operations and supply chains to enhance risk management and compliance.
  • Propose, develop and deliver environmental and sustainability training to employees and other SNF stakeholders
  • Be a visible advocate for environmental responsibility and sustainability, playing a key role in shaping a proactive safety, health, environment, sustainability, and quality (HSE) culture within the site.
  • Propose, develop and conduct environmental and sustainability audit and assurance activities.
  • Ensure all environmental monitoring activities comply with MCERTS standards, maintaining the integrity and accuracy of data collection and reporting.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive testing schedules for environmental monitoring activities, ensuring all required tests are conducted in accordance with MCERTS standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify and document all activities, products, and services that interact with the environment, assessing their potential impacts in accordance with ISO 14001 standards.
  • Collaborate with head office to gain insights into emerging markets and understand global sustainability targets.
  • Collaborate with the laboratory team to ensure accurate data collection, analysis, and reporting, maintaining the integrity of environmental monitoring efforts.

 Education, skills, and Experience required:  

  • Degree (BSc/MSc) in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Management, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years Environmental centric experience in chemical manufacturing industry
  • Chartered status or working towards accreditation with a professional body (e.g., IEMA, CIWEM, IOSH, or equivalent).
  • NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate or equivalent (desirable, especially for COMAH sites).
  • Working knowledge of ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) and sustainability frameworks (e.g., ISO 50001 – Energy Management, PAS 2060 – Carbon Neutrality).
  • Additional qualifications in carbon management, ESG reporting, or circular economy principles (desirable).
  • Proven experience with MCERTS-certified monitoring systems and procedures, ensuring compliance with UK environmental standards (desirable).

Due to changes within the Technical team, we have a great opportunity for 2 Laboratory Shift Chemists to join the team at Billingham.

The main purpose of the role is to establish and maintain an ISO 9001 compliant laboratory testing facility, providing both leadership and expertise to the process teams.

To ensure all quality related documents are written and adhered to on site and any necessary testing equipment is maintained and fit for purpose.

Key Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct quality control testing on manufactured products to ensure they meet specified standards and requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough records of lab procedures and results, ensure compliance with government regulations.
  • Ensure all lab and monitoring equipment is maintained and calibrated.
  • Prepare any chemical reagent standards necessary for in-process and finals testing.
  • Ensure all necessary environmental testing and monitoring is conducted in line with the site’s permit
  • Monitor and review the results of the quality assurance/control program, analyse laboratory data, and recommend modifications.
  • Develop new methods and techniques of analysis, in-house and by liaising with HQ in France, to continuously modernise and drive improvements on
  • Collaborate with other functions in the business to troubleshoot process chemistry
  • Develop and deliver quality related training material to site personnel.
  • Responding to product quality issues and any resulting customer complaints in line with quality management system, ensuring all quality issues are recorded and the internal/external communication is documented.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Equivalent to bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in chemistry or a related field.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, and procedures.
  • Proficient in use of HPLC for analytical work.
  • Experience in mathematical calculations used in chemical analysis.
  • Awareness of proper sample collection procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret test results.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and technical reports.
  • Proficient IT skills and competent with Microsoft
  • Knowledge/experience of Microsoft
